Johns Hopkins University Research Technologist in Baltimore, Maryland

Dr. Liyun Zhang’s laboratory (Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University) is seeking a Research Technologist. The immediate research is to understand how the mechanisms which regulate retinal neuron cell death and regeneration. Our ultimate goal is to identify new therapies which can help stop and/or completely cure retinal degeneration. The lab utilizes zebrafish to create animal models of human retinal disease. In addition to various behavioral assays, we can also conduct high-throughput drug screening assays with these fish in order to quickly identify possible signaling pathways that are important for disease progression and/or therapeutic agents which affect retinal disease.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The position will require a thorough understanding and vigilant implementation of standard scientific methods.

  • The Research Technologist will be expected to fully understand the theory behind experiments and apply critical analytical skills during assigned projects in order to identify key findings and trouble-shoot problems; attention to detail is extremely important.

  • The Research Technologist will be responsible for conducting assays analyzing small chemical compounds and/or genetic mutations for their ability to effect retinal degeneration.

  • Maintaining and monitoring zebrafish stocks

  • Preparing and/or creating transgenic plasmids for microinjection.

  • Assisting in the training of graduate/undergraduate assistants.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences or related scientific field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous research related work experience is preferred, in particular with the following techniques/experiences, Zebrafish husbandry (e.g. general care, breeding, genotyping, phenotyping, drug treatments), High resolution imaging (fluorescence and confocal microscopy), Histological and immunological tissue processing, and standard Molecular Biology techniques.

  • The Technician must be able to work both independently and in a collaborative manner with a diverse group of researchers.

Starting Salary Range: $15.50 - $26.00 HRLY (Commensurate with experience)

Employee group: Full Time

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
