Job Summary

The addition of new units is a principal driver of Marriott’s earnings growth strategy and an important element in maintaining and advancing the quality and brand equity of Marriott International. We often pursue Development transactions that do not fit exactly in our model or demand substantial time commitments. We also pursue M&A opportunities, and the timing of these transactions are unpredictable. The Vice President of Global Development will be a versatile resource available to pursue a variety of transactions as a critical part of the global development team. These types of transactions will require a close partnership with the continental development teams and the global finance organization.

Business Context: Expected Contributions - Essential Job Functions

The Vice President of Global Development will identify and pursue M&A and new business opportunities, and coordinate a multidisciplinary team involved in the review, approval, and finalization of unique development opportunities. Success in the position demands a driving focus on creation of shareholder value and earnings, as well as a passion to champion new business opportunities that build brand equity and help drive customer preference.

Key Accountabilities

  • Review and analyze potential M&A deals, large affiliation opportunities, and expansion of Marriott International’s business lines beyond its current portfolio.

  • Partner with the continent teams to identify additional growth opportunities.

  • Evaluate new business partnership opportunities with MI’s enterprise partnership group.

  • Manage aspects of the deal process internal to Marriott International, including site inspections, requesting feasibility studies and valuations, and gathering input from various subject matter experts in technology, loyalty, distribution, etc.

  • Prepare memorandums and present opportunities for approval to the appropriate Marriott committees.

  • In tandem with Marriott's Law Department, negotiate terms and conditions of management agreements, purchase, joint venture, franchise or other agreements with owner/owner's representatives. Ensure that agreement terms and conditions are acceptable to Marriott operating and staff executives.

  • Work with Marriott's Treasury and Project Finance departments to maximize returns on Marriott International investments in hotel projects.

  • As requested, participate in the resolution of workout situations.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Candidate Profile Experience

  • Seven to ten years of real estate development, finance, or investment experience with at least five years of hotel industry experience.

  • Ability to effectively structure and negotiate complex transactions, handle multiple projects on short timetables, and manage staff resources efficiently and effectively.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and capability of building lasting relationships – both internally within Marriott and externally within the hospitality industry – and “selling” Marriott International’s brands to third parties.

  • An ability to think strategically, critically, and analytically, while maintaining an enthusiastic, energetic, proactive outlook and approach to professional life.

  • Mature, professional demeanor, capable of expressing confident, independent judgment.

  • Strong contact base and excellent reputation in the hotel investment and development sector.

  • Familiarity with capital markets a plus.

Education and Certification

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Real Estate, Hotel Administration or Business; MBA or other advanced degree preferred.
