The Division of represents an integrated approach to Communications (Brand, News, Media Relations and Strategic Communications) and Government Relations (Community, State and Federal). More than 80 University Relations team members collaborate with and provide support to the university leadership and to colleges, schools and administrative units within the university. This includes promoting and raising the visibility of Cornell University to a wide variety of internal and external audiences in support of the university strategic priorities.


The Office of is the university's liaison to local, regional, national and international media organizations. For breaking news and long-term research efforts, Media Relations works across the university to connect faculty and administration leaders with news media.

The Opportunity

The Media Relations Broadcast Specialist reports to the Sr. Director of Media Relations and is an essential member of the Media Relations team. The Broadcast Specialist is responsible for operating and promoting the Cornell Broadcast Studios, Cornell's on-campus facility for university leadership, faculty and researchers to participate in local, national, and global TV and radio interviews as well as podcasts. The Broadcast Studios play an integral role in elevating Cornell's brand, reputation, and media profile by providing a high-quality multimedia space to meet or exceed that of news broadcast facilities.


The Broadcast Specialist manages activity in on-site studios operated by technicians in remote network operation centers. The Broadcast Specialist serves as the primary contact for Media Relations, communications partners, faculty, and/or external news media for any transmission requests or needs. The Broadcast Specialist engages in regular outreach with established media contacts and with outlets and producers that Cornell hopes to work with on transmissions. The Broadcast Specialist works with Media Relations colleagues to maintain a broadcast contact list. Measuring studio use and impact is a major priority for the Broadcast Specialist, who tracks media performance for live and recorded transmissions, reports on key performance metrics, and recommends refinements to improve performance.

This is a full-time position located in Ithaca, NY, an active and diverse community in which to work and thrive. The successful candidate will be expected to work on Cornell's campus in Ithaca. Remote work is not an option for this role.


Compensation: The position will be offered at between $71,000 - $76,000/annual and will be based on the final candidate's skills and experience.


Key Responsibilities

These include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating activity in two insert studios operated by technicians in remote network operation centers. May be required to work evenings or weekends to support transmissions.
  • Responding to requests from Media Relations, communications partners, faculty, or external news media to facilitate and execute recordings that support the goals and priorities for Media Relations and University Relations.
  • Planning and organizing the technical setup and operation of press conferences, including camera placement, audio configuration and stage settings.
  • Fostering and maintaining active partnerships with academic and administrative communications colleagues to elevate awareness of the resources available through the Cornell Broadcast Studios to connect the mission, goals, priorities, and accomplishments to both internal and external audiences.
  • Partnering with colleagues in Media Relations to facilitate an active and flexible program of in-studio media trainings for faculty, students and administrators at Cornell. Act as the internal expert on Broadcast operations.
  • Staying current on broadcast and multimedia industry trends and studio operations.

What You Need

  • Bachelor's Degree and at least 3 - 5 years of professional audio/video industry experience in the commercial, private or public sector (radio station, network TV station, business television or professional sound company), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Operational experience with broadcast standard audio/video production equipment and interconnects (e.g.cameras, microphones, recorders, mixers, editing systemsetc.) required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently in a dynamic, deadline driven, complex, team-based environment with multiple competing priorities.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
