What You Will Do

This position will be filled at the Research Technologist 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Research Technologist 1 ($81,700 - $133,100)

The successful applicant will perform advanced mass spectrometry analyses using either inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) and/or thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) instrumentation in support of a variety of bioassay, environmental monitoring, and threat reduction projects. Responsibilities will include sample analysis, data reduction and review and data reporting. In addition, the technologist will strongly contribute to the growth and productivity of the team by assisting in developing novel analysis techniques needed for new analytes, application streamlining, and maximizing sample throughput. Working with peers, the technologist will be responsible for the development, implementation, and completion of project objectives and will communicate results through internal reports, progress reports to sponsors, or formal presentations. The technologist will have significant responsibility for safety/security and the QA envelope of projects. The technologist will perform work and follow procedures in accordance with all applicable safety and security practices. Work is directly related to national security objectives and requires the individual to protect and maintain sensitive or classified information.

Research Technologist 2 ($90,000 - $147,100)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Technologist 2 will utilize advanced level experience in ICPMS or TIMS to create new analytical methods or protocols. The Technologist 2 will also prepare or co-prepare technical reports and manuscripts for peer reviewed publication on various aspects of associated technical work. The Technologist 2 will make contributions to new research proposals or project ideas.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Experience with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry equipment and/or thermal ionization mass spectrometry

• Strong background in analytical method development

• Demonstrated success with engineering scientific solutions for complex analytical problems

• Ability to work independently with initiative

• Ability to provide day-to-day technical support while maintaining progress on long term tasks

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

• Basic Computer skills including use of Microsoft office products

• Strong verbal and written communication skills

• Experience with data validation, data reduction, analytical data report generation, and in meeting programmatic QA/QC requirements

• Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship

Additional Job Requirements for Research Technologist 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

• Advanced-level experience with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry equipment and/or thermal ionization mass spectrometry

• Ability to prepare research documentation and provide peer-review of documentation

• Ability to contribute ideas to scientific proposals and co-author scientific publications

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a relevant Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Physical or Life Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution and a minimum of 2 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a relevant Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Physical or Life Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution and a minimum of 5 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience making low level isotope and concentration measurements in environmental or geologic samples

• Experience with multi-collector ICPMS instruments

• Experience troubleshooting and identifying instrumentation issues

• Experience working in a cleanroom environment

• Familiarity with radiochemistry sample preparation techniques

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. The position commitment for this position is a 1 year a 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
